The keiseki meals and the onsen were the main attractors, and they did not disappoint. The place is just by a river as well, and very close to Hell Valley and the rest of the attractions in the area. Nice ambience overall.

I got a lot of dietary wishes, I even forgot to mention a few. The cook and staff are amazing, they adapted the meals so that I could eat without any worries. The meals are huge. After a meal and a trip to their onsen, I would fall asleep fast. They laid out a double futon (ni mai) and it was fantastic. From all places in Japan where we slept (hotels, AirBnBs) this was the most comfortable place to sleep. There's enough to do, especially if you like nature. We had about half a meter's snow at the end of March. I'd love to go to this ryokan again. Some say this is an old and dated ryokan, that's true, but we saw that as a plus. It's like you're teleported to the past. And the staff really makes up for it.

We've stayed at many different ryokans in Japan over the years. Oyado Kiyomizuya was fine in every aspect (breakfast, baths, room comfort, service, cleanliness) but not outstanding when considering price. Other reviews complain about needing to prebook meals, removing shoes and onsen tax which are all very normal procedures for ryokans. Onsen tax is always paid separately from booking and meals needed to be reserved in advance, preferably when the room is booked.

The main staff at the front desk seemed to know enough English to help accommodate guests, and was nice to tell us about a local festival occuring the day we checked in! Rules on the onsen times were very clear, and the food options were great (it seemed to focus on cooked seafood for my stay).

This was our second stay, we came about 10 years ago and when I was thinking where in Japan I would like to spend my 70th birthday, this was an obvious choice. Dinner and breakfast were excellent, just as remembered, and re-living the whole experience was a lot of fun. Physically the hotel has deteriorated somewhat, renovation look overdue, but overall the stay was great.

Unexpectedly good Kaiseki Ryori or traditional multi-course Japanese dinner and breakfast. Great service from Mr Ueno, our room attendant. He made a real difference! Location was a bit isolated but it was quiet and maybe a 15-minute walk to town center. Very close to Jugokudani or Hell Springs Park.

Good location at the heart of the Onsen area, right across from a walking trail loop. Property needs some upgrades but it’s retaining the traditional ryokan hotel charm. Service is superb and definitely get the dinner and breakfast option if you love Japanese food- 15+ different items served per meal- in your room!

The hotel is about 10 minutes uphill walk from the bus terminal, quite a challenge when dragging heavy luggages. Anyway, the hotel is a little bit ancient, nothing glamours compared to the grand hotels next door, but the hospitality of the staff supplemented all and the hotel presents a cozy home like atomasphere which we seldom experience traveling worldwide. The Japanese style room is spacious and very clean, the futon beds are super comfortable. The hot spring is tiny and has nothing to do with splendours but one can feel how ancient hot springs used to be.
